Emergency Locksmith Called to Cheyne Walk, Winchmore Hill N21
Shaun and Jayden from ASJ Locksmiths attended a residential property in Cheyne Walk, Winchmore Hill N21, late on a Saturday evening after receiving an emergency call from a homeowner whose back doors could no longer be locked.
The homeowner explained that the handle was spinning freely and the locking mechanism would not engage, leaving him unable to secure the property.
During our initial telephone conversation, the homeowner also explained that another locksmith had attended earlier that day but had been unable to resolve the problem.
With the back doors unable to lock and the evening getting later, the homeowner needed a solution to make his property secure.
Initial Inspection – Failed Slave Door Gearbox
Upon arrival, Shaun and Jayden inspected the double-door locking system to identify the cause of the failure.
Our investigation revealed that the gearbox had failed and the spindle cam had snapped.
The damaged gearbox was part of the slave door locking mechanism.
On a set of double doors, the slave door is generally the door that remains secured in position while the main door is used for everyday access.
The slave locking mechanism operates bolts that secure the door at the top and bottom.
When the gearbox fails, these locking components may no longer operate correctly, preventing the double doors from being secured.
Unfortunately, the correct replacement gearbox was not something we had available on the van that evening.
Our Immediate Priority – Securing the Property
One of the challenges locksmiths face is the enormous variety of locking mechanisms and specialist components fitted to doors.
No locksmith can realistically carry every possible replacement gearbox or mechanism on their van.
However, attending an emergency locksmith job late on a Saturday evening and leaving the homeowner with unsecured back doors was something we wanted to avoid.
Our immediate priority was to establish whether the property could be secured safely until the correct replacement parts became available.
Shaun and Jayden removed the faceplate trim and manually engaged the top and bottom locking bolts on the slave door.
Once both bolts were engaged, the faceplate trim was reinstalled and the slave door secured in position.
The main door could then be locked.
Although the faulty gearbox still required replacement, the homeowner and his family were able to secure their property for the night.
This provided a temporary solution until the permanent repair could be arranged.
Ordering the Correct Replacement Parts
The following day, we provided the homeowner with a quotation for the replacement components required to repair the failed locking mechanism.
Once the quotation was approved, the necessary parts were ordered.
A return appointment was then arranged for a date convenient for the homeowner.
Rather than attempting to fit an unsuitable component, we ensured the correct replacement parts were obtained for the existing double-door locking system.
Returning to Cheyne Walk – Permanent Gearbox Repair
Shaun and Jayden returned to the property in Cheyne Walk, Winchmore Hill N21, to complete the permanent repair.
The failed components were removed and the replacement parts installed.
Once the replacement was completed, both doors were thoroughly tested to confirm that the complete double-door locking system was operating correctly.
The temporary security arrangement had served its purpose, and the permanent repair was now complete.
Both doors were left operating correctly, with the locking system fully tested.
A Genuine 5-Star Google Review From Ross
Following our initial emergency attendance, we were extremely grateful to receive a 5-star Google review from Ross, the homeowner.
After another locksmith had already attended without resolving the situation, Ross was relieved that Shaun and Jayden had managed to secure his property that same evening.
Receiving genuine customer feedback means a great deal to our family-run business.
We believe customers should be able to see real examples of the work we carry out, including situations where an immediate permanent repair is not possible.
What Can Homeowners Learn From This Job?
If the handle on your UPVC or composite double doors suddenly begins spinning freely, it may indicate a failure within the locking mechanism.
Possible causes include a damaged gearbox, failed spindle components or other internal mechanical faults.
However, the exact cause should always be established through inspection.
A failed locking mechanism does not necessarily mean your entire door needs replacing.
In this particular Winchmore Hill job, the slave gearbox had failed and the spindle cam had snapped.
Although the correct replacement parts were unavailable during the initial emergency attendance, Shaun and Jayden were able to secure the property temporarily before returning to complete the repair.
This demonstrates the importance of both accurate fault diagnosis and practical emergency locksmith experience.
